ABSTRACT
Official relations did not start before 1838 although efforts are documented from way back under Emperor Joseph II, shortly after the American Revolution and independence. The revolution in 1848 led to bilateral difficulties as the United States sympathized with the Hungarians. With Italian and German unification, concomitant with Austria’s declining stature, relations became more and more inconspicuous.
