ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces pre-school and compulsory education in the county. It first introduces pre-school education which, although not compulsory, is considered a key part of the education system. After that it covers the development of compulsory education in rural areas since the founding of the PRC in 1949 and its characteristics in different developmental stages. The third part introduces the supply and quality of teachers in rural schools. This chapter is the shorters chapters in the book but it gives a panoramic description on the development and polices of pre-school and compulsory education. This chapter is important for understanding the following rest of the chapters.
