Module Number and Title – Module 1: Introduction, Compassion, and Tricky Brain

In the first module of compassion focused therapy (CFT) for groups, group leaders review group rules and norms as well as discuss expectations related to client confidentiality and safety. Group members discuss their understanding of compassion, and leaders present the CFT definition of compassion as, “Sensitivity to suffering and distress in self and others with a commitment to try to alleviate and prevent it.” Leaders discuss the flows of compassion, including compassion to others, compassion from others, and self-compassion. Leaders provide psychoeducation on the tricky brain and evolutionary theory, and explain how our brains get caught in unhelpful loops at times. Group leaders introduce the mantra, “It is not your fault, but it is your responsibility.”
