ABSTRACT

Incomparable American clowns Bill Irwin and David Shiner examine the roots of their careers, in the Pickle Family Circus and on the streets of Paris (respectively), the launch of the New Vaudeville movement, working with Cirque du Soleil, and their first encounter, leading to the Tony Award-winning Broadway smash sensation Fool Moon, followed many years later by their lauded reprise, Old Hats. Along the way, they discuss their influences – including Pio Nock, Marcel Marceau, and Dimitri – and their attitudes towards the art of clowning, from the sublime to the ridiculous.
