The World Health Organization, in its constitution, defines health as the “the state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.” From a community perspective, health status goals are achieved through environmental, educational, healthcare delivery, social, and population-based approaches. Mortality rates are used as the measure of deaths within a population. Life expectancy rates are directly related to mortality. Life expectancy statistics reflect the average life span of individuals in a population from selected starting points, such as birth or age 65. The infant mortality rate is another important measure of the health of a population. It is defined as “the death of an infant before his or her first birthday. The infant mortality rate is the number of infant deaths for every 1,000 live births.” Morbidity is defined as any departure, subjective or objective, from a state of physiological or psychological well-being. Health determinants are those factors that affect our individual health status and that of populations.
