ABSTRACT

The sustainability of a dwelling does not depend only on its integration of green technologies. Social and cultural sustainability are improved when adequate attention is given to the needs of a diverse population. As society and community demographics change, there will be different demands for a variety of housing types. This chapter illustrates communities with residential concepts that contribute to sustainability from social, economic and cultural perspectives. They include live-work spatial organizations; adaptable homes; dwellings that enable seniors to live in their homes for longer; multigenerational dwellings; and prefabricated housing. Finally, the 1.8-Meter Width House in Tokyo, Japan is presented as a case study.
