ABSTRACT

Designing mobility and connectivity networks with suitable integration of streets and paths is central to sustainable neighborhoods. By assessing a place’s needs during planning and considering pedestrians, cyclists and drivers, neighborhoods can become safer and more accessible. This chapter explores the current condition of neighborhood streets and presents recommendations to improve their efficiency and safety. The benefits of alternative street designs such as shared streets are also explored. Finally, the Västra Hamnen community in Malmö, Sweden is presented as an illustration of sustainable mobility.
