ABSTRACT

Public open spaces are important for healthy living habits, social interaction and biodiversity, and should be planned while considering people’s needs. When a neighborhood has residents with varying ages and levels of mobility, it is necessary to accommodate them all. Furthermore, well-planned open spaces provide multiple options that suit different activities and weather conditions. This chapter explores outdoor public spaces and the factors that contribute to their use and comfortable enjoyment. Different types of spaces at the neighborhood level are described and design standards for their size and arrangement are presented. The chapter also investigates the use of parks and offers additional measures for their safety. Finally, Keppel Bay in Singapore is presented to demonstrate a comfortable and attractive public open space.
