ABSTRACT
To reduce carbon and ecological footprints and achieve sustainability, denser communities are recommended. Compact neighborhoods will also economically justify the introduction of public transit and local commerce. This chapter charts the evolution of high-density living; describes contemporary innovative planning strategies; outlines guidelines for livable compact neighborhoods; and demonstrates their implementation in the 2 McIntyre Drive Social Housing project in Melbourne, Australia.
