ABSTRACT

In this concluding chapter we ask whether paradoxes are surface manifestations of deeper contradictions that go to the very heart of existence. This chapter thus advances an explicit metatheory of paradox. Gleaned from the first part of the book, the chapter begins by identifying the pervasive paradoxes that ostensibly transcend discipline: from fine art to physics. From here, we then identify the manner in which the manifestation of paradox reveals a rhythmic pattern that permeates our sensorium. In a bid to help navigate the paradoxical dynamics our world presents, the chapter then explores possibilities for developing a rigorous ‘epistemology of balance’. The book is drawn to a formal close by underlining the Faustian hazards inherent to any and all attempts to outwit paradox. Instead readers are counselled to embrace the formidable pedagogical potential for paradox as a sublime didactic device.
