ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the manifestation of paradox in nature. The chapter begins by tackling paradox in the numerical sciences (including paradoxes of mathematics, geometry, and physics), before turning attention to paradoxes in the life sciences (including paradoxes of chemistry, biology, and medicine). The chapter then examines paradoxes in respect of ecology and environmental sustainability (whereupon five problematic assumptions inherent to considerations of ecological resilience are identified). In the concluding part of the chapter, the focus shifts to the manner in which paradox emerges between science and its ‘non-scientific’ counterparts: art, mystery, and religion.
