ABSTRACT

Unhealthy jealousy is a state where a person demands that their partner must only have eyes for them and must not show interest in anyone they deem to be a love rival. By contrast, healthy jealousy is a state where the person prefers that their partner only has eyes for them and does not show interest in anyone they deem to be a love rival, but does not insist that this must be the case. To feel unhealthy jealous, a person needs first to focus on a scenario that has three people in it: the person, their partner and another person whom the person views as an actual or potential love rival. When a person holds attitudes that underpin unhealthy jealousy and they experience this emotion in one context, they can unwittingly maintain their jealousy problem by thinking that relevant people are potential love rivals.
