ABSTRACT

Booth (2015) encouraged communication scholars to focus on the diversity and agency of transgender fictional characters versus monolithic narratives that focus mostly on physical transitioning. One way to achieve this goal is to encourage and support stories told from transgender perspectives and experiences. Many producers have been criticized for their superficial and stereotypical portrayals of transgender characters and the perceived lack of credibility by critics. In response to these criticisms, including casting cisgender actors to play transgender roles, many shows have added transgender writers or, at the very least, hired expert consultants. This chapter reviews a variety of participants both in front of and behind the camera.
