ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes relationship formations (platonic, romantic, and familial) mostly between cis- and transgender characters. Unlike shows with transfeminine ensemble casts (e.g., Pose, Transparent), there is little interaction between transmasculine or nonbinary characters in the sample. A common strategy used by television producers and writers is to create a dichotomy of characters, framing them as either friends or foes for dramatic effect. The following is an analysis of the various relationship portrayals.
