ABSTRACT

Residential work has special strains. This is a fact that must always be kept in mind. Care has to be provided for twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and this means that the pattern of the working week which has become so common in most types of modern work–the five-day week and the short working day–are more difficult to arrange for those who are taking care of people in residence. Not only is the work generally physically exacting and emotionally exhausting but those who undertake it often feel cut off from the activities of the community outside their doors, as well as from their own family and friends and their professional colleagues.
