ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents how traditional Hindu dance developed over the centuries with the help of both religious and local cultural practices. It briefly updates the readers on the many institutions revolving around the figure of women dancers; prominently the devadasis in South India. The book begins with Louise's visit to Bombay in 1951 for a meeting with Manipuri artist Priyagopal to discuss Manipuri dance, his career on the global stage, and future plans. It concludes with Ibetombi Devi's successful Australian tour of 1957, with Shivaram, offering commentary on finance, reputation and cultural understanding. The book reflects on the challenge faced by the two pioneering Manipuri dancers, to experiment with the age-old tradition and present their art on the Australian stage.
