ABSTRACT

Over the years, Manipuri dance productions have been very well received, with many dance critics noting the striking amalgam of traditional continuity and experimentation and innovations taking place in performance. The process of perpetuating appreciation of the nuances of Manipuri dance has also helped in increasing awareness about Manipur's other vibrant cultural traditions and heritage on the international stage. The scenes were helped by an activated voice that projected Louise's words from her journal explaining her immense love for India and Hindu temple dance. Today, Indian dance in Australia is celebrated and represented by professional dance artists, companies, schools and amateur community groups. In the end, however, Priyagopal and Ibetombi have been forgotten. But Shivaram's impact through Kathakali is acknowledged even today—something that even Louise did not expect to accomplish.
