ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book analyzes how and why the soul has been lost from scientific discourses, healthcare practices, and ethical discussions. It examines how the soul has been banned from scientific discourse. The book analyzes how its role in medicine, healthcare, and bioethics has been eradicated. It explains this erasure of the soul. It is argued that the specific scientific worldview of naturalism is responsible for the soul’s demise. The book argues what has happened to the soul to the long-standing discourse of dualism, which is still influential in medicine. It examines disenchantment in medicine and healthcare. The book focuses on re-enchantment. It analyzes the images that dominate the current ethical debates in healthcare and medicine: the ideas of homo economicus, body machine, lone ranger, detached concern, and consumer/client.
