ABSTRACT
Chapter 12 looks at the changes in traditional exhibition, especially in light of the COVID pandemic, where theatres took a massive hit & their possibility of resurgence has been questioned due to the disenchantment of Gen Z+. It highlights the critical role exhibition plays for independent film & outlines the selective process by exhibitors. Looking at the commercial agreements between distributors & exhibitors, as well as formulae to calculate the film rental price fee, the chapter analyses how economics is altering the way exhibition will operate in the coming decade. In an interview with Andrew Woodyatt, the Marketing & Development director at London’s Rio cinema, he attributes their success to the audience community & the importance of genre and Oscar winners on cinema attendance. The chapter closes with a unique case study on Oscar-winning film Parasite, a Korean ‘staircase’ movie on class disparity, which was able to attract worldwide attention & Oscar buzz & enjoy a wide global reach with online streaming platforms.
