ABSTRACT

Seventy-two years of the great division during the five dynasties and ten kingdoms period led to the decline of science and civilization. The subsequent Song dynasty was one of the most technologically advanced dynasties in Chinese history, its most important development being the invention of printing. Tang Poetry, including ancient style poetry and metrical verses, generally refers to poems composed by poets in the Tang dynasty, which was a period of great prosperity in poetry creation in Chinese history. The mainstream of poetry in the Tang dynasty is metrical poetry, whose poems have specific requirements for metrical patterns. In the Tang-Song dynasties, there appeared important theories about the rhetoric of historiography, literary rhetoric, and the rhetoric of poetry. Chen Kui generalized and summed up the basic principles and rules of rhetoric as seen in these works and discussed the figures of speech in a comprehensive and insightful way.
