ABSTRACT

A program is a group of interrelated projects managed in a coordinated way, or a single large project broken down into individual subprojects. This chapter explains program management and portfolio management. One goal of the portfolio manager is to maximize the value of the portfolio by evaluating new projects or programs for inclusion and work with the governance committee as they make approval and priority decisions to the entire organization. Program management is the coordinated management of a program to realize its strategic objectives. This is accomplished by integrating the cost, schedule, and effort of multiple projects. Project management is growing in the healthcare industry, and the concepts of program and portfolio management are becoming more widespread along with project management offices (PMOs). There are multiple types of PMOs, and they typically provide one or more of the following: project management standards, project management guidelines, education, mentoring, project auditing, and project management resources.
