ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the more common technical concepts and terms used when implementing software. A thin client is a computer or application that relies on other hardware for most of the traditional computational work. The benefits of this technology are lower cost and easier maintenance of the terminal workstations. A storage area network (SAN) is a remote data storage device connected to servers that appears to be locally attached. A SAN typically has its own network connection that runs only between itself and the main servers. The wireless network is important for the increased demand for mobile workstations. Mobile devices are becoming more prevalent in healthcare and provide a unique challenge to the information technology department. High availability is a system design intended to achieve the highest level of availability possible for a system. The concept of redundancy can be applied to most components of any system, from the network to file storage.
