ABSTRACT

Chapter 37 contains commentary on the importance of the construction industry in the world economy, and in the context of improving living standards in less developed countries. The basics of a construction contract are reviewed, and their role as a contract management manual discussed. Some challenges arising from rule of law issues are outlined, and how they may be counteracted by the use of international arbitration. Appropriate application of contracts is suggested to be instrumental in achieving successful projects. The engineers’ and lawyers’ roles in the application of contracts to construction projects are emphasised in a brief review of the five parts of the book.
