ABSTRACT

The description might have included the big number of lawyers in Edinburgh. It may be the influence of the professional people that has preserved one or two theatres in Edinburgh, just as it must have been the uncultural commercialism of Dundee that made that city closes the one theatre it had. Princes Street with its luxury shops and its moneyed customers is the most influential factor in Edinburgh. Princes Street brings snobbery from its home in the suburbs into the centre of the city. The tastes of Edinburgh are Princes Street tastes, that is, class tastes. Edinburgh University is not Edinburgh. Geographical factors naturally had much to do with it. The dull reactionism of Edinburgh University, for example, is an objective reality.
