ABSTRACT

It has been repeatedly found that autistic young people have a higher rate of mental health issues than the general population. Autistic young people are constantly making judgements about whether it is worth engaging in an activity given the risk of high levels of stress, fear and anxiety that may accompany the task. Training in time and stress management, as well as increasing the availability of family and community support, are thought to reduce the stress levels of parents caring for an autistic young person. Ozsivadjian highlight that autistic young people usually demonstrate their anxiety in three different ways: through behavior; somatic signs; and cognitive explanations. Low mood is also more common in autistic young people who are verbally able. It has been found that positive social identification and being part of several social groups can support self-esteem and low mood.
