ABSTRACT

A number of questions are posed that could be used to generate discussion about The Man-Eating Sofa. Woven into The Man-Eating Sofa story is considerable information about autism/ social communication and interaction difficulties (SCID), so young people with social communication difficulties may relate to the events in the story. In addition, the story is a useful resource to promote understanding and discussion among young people and adults who may not have considered the impacts of living with autism/SCID. Maintaining sensory and emotional regulation is a significant challenge for autistic young people. Children with autism often find eye contact uncomfortable; in fact, many neurotypical people find eye contact intense when discussing a difficult situation. Many children with autism seem to find it easier to think in pictures or patterns rather than words. Autistic young people may not understand that it is tactful not to comment when someone's appearance is different.
