ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concept of nudge and the actors most involved in its use and development, followed by nudging’s translation from academia into policy and regulatory practice and discourse. The discussion continues with the rationales for intervention in the presence of behavioural biases. Since intervention rooted in behavioural justifications can be based on different rationales and materialise through distinct tools, the reasons that may justify the appeal of nudging are identified. The normative debate that nudging has triggered and some dangers of this tool are also briefly discussed. This chapter intends to present core debates around nudging.
