ABSTRACT

This chapter presents stimulating exercises with lively illustrations to show how Irish speakers talk about their marital status, brothers, sisters and children. It also shows how Irish speakers introduce their family members to others. There are several terms used to refer to children in Irish. The term “baby” in English has been adopted into Irish as babaí and baibín. Baibín is commonly used in Cois Fharraige. Leanbh is also widely used in Irish. In Cois Fharraige, gasúr is the common term one hears to refer to a child of either gender. To ask how many children someone has, people can say Cé mhéad páiste atá agat? The response can simply be a personal number.
