ABSTRACT

An evaluation of filtering strategies in past and contemporary architecture reveals five instrumental parameters in the production of filters exposing their deeper architectural essence: Origin, density, thickness, function, and message. The continuity of these strategies can be studied across diverse cultures and times, and contributes to a global, inclusive understanding of our relationship to the built environment, one that is capable of continuous expansion by new generations of architects and theorists. The text explores ten cases organized around the five categories.
