ABSTRACT

Three of the six US history textbooks adopted by TEA and in current use for high school were reviewed for their Latino representation in this content analysis study. Notice that subtotals by topic and by group could thus be calculated and compared across the three textbooks. In the representation of Puerto Ricans and Cubans, the second and third largest groups, the three textbooks also differ in their relative coverage. In addition to the sentences from the narrative and other sources, there are also some significant visuals related to Latinos in the three textbooks. While it is possible to make comparisons among textbooks along the quantitative aspects and arrive at relative numbers in terms of sentence counts, there are no easy answers to determining what is enough in an absolute sense. The most striking contrast between texts is the sheer difference in the scope and depth of coverage.
