Teaching Values is an attempt to analyze and discuss some of these education issues from a critical perspective. Perhaps this is why the issue of teaching values has become so contested, why people such as the Reverend Jerry Falwell and William Bennett ubiquitously appear on television, in print, and now online, waging their "noble crusade" to restore values in the United States. Religious and political leaders in the United States as well as around the world keep exhorting us to adhere to the fundamentals of a moral life as they increasingly attack all who fall outside their vision of piety and justice. To the contrary, Teaching Values is about reconsidering some of the many alleged moral principles at work in teaching, curriculum development, and educational policy. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
