ABSTRACT

The story of the author coming to the College of Mount Saint Vincent is a story very much about finding a place, a place to stand and to take a stand. The College of Mount Saint Vincent was founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1910 and admitted only women. Originally founded in 1847 as the Academy of Mount Saint Vincent, it was located on a parcel of land known as McGown's Pass that is now part of the northern end of Central Park in Manhattan. By 1857, the Sisters of Charity purchased land in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The College of Mount Saint Vincent now stands on land once owned by a renowned Shakespearean actor of his day, Edwin Forrest, who sold approximately fifty acres to the sisters for $100,000. The College of Mount Saint Vincent is an urban liberal arts college blessed with a pastoral campus.
