ABSTRACT
The paradoxes of existence are often it deepest sources of pain and revelation. Living with ambiguity can be enriching as well as stressful, however, if one can appreciate the multiple meanings of life’s experiences. As relations with the trader and priest revealed, stress could contribute as much to the band’s unity and identity as it did to people’s disunity and uncertainty. Recent years had witnessed the development of a nascent “red power” movement in the Northwest, focusing primarily upon native rights and economic opportunities. Every human community combines qualities that are culturally unique with those that are universally human. One recent attempt to make education programs more valuable to native people in the Territories has been the introduction of vocational training in such areas as nursing, mechanics, and heavy-duty equipment operation.
