ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to the beliefs and practices of Buddhism. It begins with a discussion surrounding the place of Buddhism as a religion, and also as a construct that is far more diverse than is usually presented in the classroom. Beliefs such as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path are explored. The life of the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, is narrated in its received form and analysed as a way of understanding the wider message of Buddhism. As with all chapters surrounding the six religions explored in this book the nature of humanity within Buddhist teaching is examined. Also explored are the main forms of religious expression within Buddhism. It is hoped that this chapter will provide the basis for a teacher to understand Buddhism, and also a springboard for further exploration.
