ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to the beliefs and practices of Islam. It begins with a discussion about the diversity of Islam and the different types of Islam that can be found in the world. Beliefs such as the nature of Allah and the Six Beliefs of Sunni Islam are explored within the Muslim context. There is a focus on the life of Muhammad (pbuh) as the ‘seal of the prophets’ and an exemplar of living in submission to Allah. As with all chapters surrounding the six religions explored in this book the nature of humanity within Muslim teaching is examined. Also explored are the main forms of religious expression within Islam. It is hoped that this chapter will provide the basis for a teacher to understand Islam, and also a springboard for further exploration.
