ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses one of the most common elements of an application for further education: personal statements. Personal statements are a compulsory part of Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) applications, but many students find them challenging to complete and seek tutors to help them write a compelling personal essay. This chapter covers all of the important steps when supporting a student to write their personal statement: understanding the task, checking their first draft, providing subject-specific guidance, planning a lesson, and ensuring that you help them overcome the most common issues or problems. There is also information about Oxbridge-specific personal statements and the Supplementary Application Questionnaire’s (SAQ) additional requirements.
