ABSTRACT

The second overview chapter covers the top five things that tutors need to do when they get a new student. This checklist will ensure that the tutor knows what the student needs to study and how to tailor the lessons precisely to them. The first two items on this list include gathering the important information and assessing their current level. To ensure that new tutors get all the answers they need, the chapter contains a flow chart delineated by subject and age/key stage/qualification, as well as some general question prompts. The rest of the chapter explains the most effective methods for assessing students in each of those subjects and groups, with additional advice for young learners, adult learners, and some generic assessment methods.
