ABSTRACT

This chapter starts out with examining the traditional role of a university supervisor looking both at the advantages and pitfall of this method. It exemplifies by some successful research groups. There is a discussion about that innovative groups need the leader to furnish expectation of creativity. Encouragement and resources are also vital parts in leading a creative team. Additional factors such as beauty and structure are also important for supporting creativity.

The chapter then goes on to examine team leadership of the developing team. This is done by referring to Susan Wheelan and others’ research on how teams develop in stages and need different types of leadership in different stages. Not only the group will go through a series of crisis. Individuals will also at times go through a creative crisis. Surviving such crisis leads to a new maturity. The group and the group leader are important support factors in this personal development. Practical advice on how you can improve safety and elicit ideas from the groups is also given.
