ABSTRACT

This chapter describes project management from a research and development perspective. It is not an education for project managers but rather tries to describe and explain the main functions that need to be there in a complex project in relation to creativity and innovation. Since collaborative projects are common in developing new technology, the workings of complex collaborative projects are described. Using already available information is crucial for speeding up projects. Borrowing results from other areas of science and technology can increase the speed of development dramatically. The chapter also describes how to align a project with the needs of the participants. In this context, the project committee as a steering tool is described with possibilities and pitfalls. It is important to have mature participants who can look at the project from several perspectives. This is described based on personal experiences of working with industrial network collaboration using research institutes and international research collaboration. It also deals with how you can handle limited resources combined with overambitious goals. Different measures of quality of research and development are described. Time planning of research and development is often regarded as impossible but can be achieved. But to be able to time plan, it is necessary to be aware of how single persons can be overloaded in an organisation with several projects.
