Like Kesselring, his chief of staff in Rome had knowledge neither of the opening date of Arnim’s attack nor of its immediate results. He learned quite by accident on Monday evening, February 15, when a staff officer who had just returned from Tunisia by plane made dinner conversation and revealed Arnim’s success.
