ABSTRACT
The division trained for more than a year before going to the United Kingdom in the spring of 1942. In the early autumn, the 1st Battalion of the 1st Armored Regiment, along with other units, moved to Scotland. For twenty days, escorted by five armed trawlers, the men cruised the sea toward an unknown destination. The center of the assigned infestation area was about thirty miles away, and at first light on the clear, crisp morning of November 25, the vehicles started out, winding over goat tracks and sheep paths, past upland Arab shepherds that made Daubin think of biblical figures. There were four patients in the ambulance. One was an Oberleutnant whose Mark IV had been destroyed. Since he and the British medical orderly could speak French, Daubin had a brief exchange of conversation with the German, who was sure the Americans would lose the war.
