ABSTRACT

The basis of any improvement in national health must be an allround increase in wages. Apart from a general advance in working class wage standards, there are certain special measures which may be taken to improve nutrition. It is the Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation, and its purpose is to put a bottom in the market for primary products. Quite apart from the direct nutritional advantages of this scheme there are few measures which would ease the working of evacuation of school children more than one which provided for children to have their midday meals at school. If the control applied at these strategic points-flour milling, bacon curing, milk wholesaling, sugar refining, and so on-were in the public instead of the private interest, a plan for improving nutrition could be carried out without any other extensions of public ownership in the field of food.
