ABSTRACT

This last chapter of this book deals with a variety of forms of cultural consumption by the youth of Soviet Ukraine, which were considered by the KGB as “dangerous” Americanization of the youth culture during the 1970s and the 1980s. Focusing on the KGB operations against forbidden Western literature, non-traditional religions of Krishnaism and charismatic Christian sects from America, and erotic experimentations, this chapter describes how various cultural practices, promoted by the Soviet state, became an arena of anti-Soviet activities. At the same time, this chapter demonstrates that despite all the KGB efforts, cultural consumption led not only to its “Americanization,” but also to its “Ukrainization” by the beginning of perestroika.
