ABSTRACT

The People’s Republic of China’s increasing power in Asia is a great concern to many countries in the region. This is likely to result in the US increasingly moving its military capacities from Europe to Asia in order to contain China and to form alliances, possible something like an Asian North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), with countries such as Japan, the Republic of Korea, Viet Nam and the Philippines. This could also include Australia and New Zealand. However, different interests and distance between these countries would complicate such an alliance. If China continues to grow economically, and if it succeeds to dominate Asia and become a regional hegemon, it could subsequently seek further influence in Europe and other regions. How can Europe deal with this challenge? How should Europe manage its relations with China vs the US?
