ABSTRACT

The introduction establishes the author's broad perspective on professional ethics as inseparable from personal morality, the ethical stance of industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology qua profession, the moral standing of the organizations with which I-O psychologists work, and the contribution of all those to socioeconomic-political standards of social justice. And all of those, including the scientific research and professional practice of IOP's, are driven by often-unrecognized personal and social values, hence the primacy of Values in the title of the book, and the change to Values and Ethics of [rather than merely in] I-O psychology. The point is made that I-O psychology has largely subordinated the humanistic ideals that are part of the heritage of psychology. The author tries to prompt readers “to consider the ways in which their own values disagree or are in accord with mine, and—more importantly—how they affect their ethical deliberations. In that way we may together raise the level of discourse, if not necessarily agreement, in moral reasoning and ethical problem-solving among I-O psychologists.”
