ABSTRACT

For many of the activities of Government in Scotland, the Secretary of State is himself responsible to Parliament. The administration of forestry and of the Crown Estate, executive responsibility has been placed by Parliament in the hands of a body of Commissioners. The scheduling of Development Areas in Scotland is a function exercised by the Secretary of State jointly with the President of the Board of Trade, and along with a number of his ministerial colleagues he is a member of Committees of the Privy Council concerned with agricultural research, nature conservation, medical research and university affairs. The Forestry Commissioners normally meet in London, but they have National Committees for Scotland, for England and for Wales. The Forestry Commission has an important economic part to play by providing employment in rural areas, especially in the Scottish Highlands.
