ABSTRACT

Readers will be guided through the history of writing centers, their purpose, and the spaces they typically occupy. Research will trace the evolution of writing centers through secondary schools, universities, colleges, and community centers. The chapter continues with insight into why writing centers have (so far) stopped short of professional spaces. Alternative services in workplaces are described, as well as factors that call for more comprehensive and effective writing support.

If you’ve worked in an academic writing center before, you’re likely familiar with your own center’s history (or at least portions of it). By looking at the wider landscape of writing centers over more than a century, we can learn from their expansion into new areas and consider how—and why—the workplace makes a fantastic new frontier.
