ABSTRACT
With the end of the war in Europe Churchill struggled to maintain the Coalition. He dreaded the return to party politics with its bitterness and strife. He wanted to attend the next Big Three meeting and to continue his efforts to contain Stalin from a position of as much strength as he could. Churchill’s ‘Caretaker Government’, as it was known, was not without its virtues during its two months of office. Churchill was not, as so many believed, against the welfare state. The Conservatives fought the election on two fronts: personal loyalty to Churchill, and propaganda about the ‘evils’ and dangers of socialism. The greatest task confronting the organizers of Mr Churchill’s election campaign at Woodford is that of making his adherents realize the importance of recording their votes. Churchill’s agreement was purely formal. There is every likelihood that the United States intended using the bomb, irrespective of Churchill’s views.
