ABSTRACT

In Greece, guerrilla bands, mostly Communist, were harassing the German occupation, which was barely in control of the country. The Greek king, fretting about his traditionally insecure throne, was not with his forces in exile, which were languishing in the Egypt and rent with the political discontent. On 17 July Rommel was seriously wounded. (He made a splendid recovery, in time to commit suicide at Hitler’s orders for his suspected part in the attempt on Hitler’s life.) The Americans agreed to extend Lend–Lease until the defeat of the Japan, which now took up the major part of the Anglo-American discussions. Churchill justly pointed out that the Burma campaign, which had saved India and kept open the link with China, had been the largest land engagement of the Japanese forces; the British army had so far suffered 40,000 battle casualties there.
