ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of China's shifting development strategies in contemporary times, treating these as processes of institutional change shaped by conflicts and cooperation between emergent and incumbent interests within particular historical contexts. In particular, the chapter makes clear how competing interests, individually and collectively, leverage technological developments to reorganise state–market arrangements, and compete for material and non-material gains in a hierarchical global economy. The chapter discusses the main arguments of the book, which answer the question of how we can better understand the drivers and impact of innovation and technology policies in contemporary China.
